Heaven forbid you order a regular latte in a Melbourne cafe. Once upon a time, it was us plant based milk lovers who were the subject of glares but with more people moving to the oat-y side, plant based milks are fast becoming the norm.
Wide Open Agriculture (ASX: WOA) is seeing success with their oat milk sold under their retail brand, Dirty Clean Food. The Company has been actively focussing on expanding the brand’s distribution with the latest country set to receive oat milky goodness being Taiwan.
The popularity of plant-based milks is growing rapidly in the Asia-Pacific region. Mordor Intelligence valued the alternative milk market at USD $435 million back in 2018 and projected a compound annual growth rate of 11.6% to 2025.
Have an oat latte and it’s not hard to see why. While taste is highly personal, oat milk ranks highly for flavour and creaminess. Plus, oat milk production releases 80% less greenhouse gas emissions than cow’s milk. Water wise, it takes 628 litres to produce one litre of cow’s milk, but only 48 litres to produce one litre of oat milk- that’s 13 times less than cow’s milk!
With supermarket aisles bursting with oat milk varieties and brands WOA has ensured that they stand out from the crowd by making the world’s first carbon neutral oat milk that is produced with regeneratively farmed oats, giving them an edge and another tick in the environmentally conscious consumer’s shopping list.
Over the past seven months, WOA has been working to expand their distribution network and has secured their fifth distribution agreement. The exclusive two year distribution contract with market expansion services provider DKSH will ensure the distribution of Dirty Clean Food’s range of products in Taiwan. DKSH operates in 36 markets and generated impressive net sales of CHF 11.1 billion (AUD $16.2b) for 2021.
Under the agreement DKSH will oversee the marketing, sales and distribution of all four flavours of Dirty Clean Food oat milk including Original, Barista, Chocolate and Coffee.
Dr Ben Cole, Managing Director of WOA said: “We are thrilled to partner with DKSH to launch Dirty Clean Food’s entry into the plant-based drinks market in Taiwan. DKSH is a global leader in market expansion services, with broad reach and best in class capabilities. We are hopeful that this is the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership between our companies.
The first shipment is expected to be delivered by July 2022. Sales from the new arrangement are estimated to total AUD $650,000 for WOA.
The deal comes after WOA announced a supply agreement with Monde Nissin Australia to supply Buntine Protein- “a functional, plant-based protein manufactured from Australian
Sweet Lupin, regeneratively grown in the Western Australian Wheatbelt.”
The protein is produced without a carbon footprint or water pollution and has a broad array of potential uses, from plant-based meats to dairy, baked goods, noodles and protein supplements.
Monde Nissin is planning to utilise the protein as a core ingredient in new food products and will in turn increase the commercial potential and value of the protein.
