After 4 year certification process, Elsight partner Airobotics secures regulatory clearance to operate its drones above people

If you’ve ever had fears about being knocked out by a drone falling out of the sky, rest assured there is a massive regulatory hurdle for drone operators to overcome. So serious are the safety ramifications that it has taken drone company Elsight (ASX: ELS) and its tech partner Airobotics 4 years to meet the certification standards in a process it has finally cleared with US aviation regulators.

Elsight’s significant milestone in the drone industry comes from having obtained a Type Certificate from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its Halo-enabled Airobotics Optimus-1EX system. This certification paves the way for safe drone flight operations over people and infrastructure without the need for case-by-case waivers.

According to Elsight, many drone companies have initiated this process to be granted such certification but Airobotics stands as the first to achieve the FAA certification.

The Type Certificate, announced by David Boulter, the FAA’s Associate Administrator for Aviation Safety, at the Commercial UAV Expo in Las Vegas, reflects the compliance of the Optimus-1EX system’s design with stringent FAA safety and noise standards.

The extensive engineering and operational review processes were conducted by the FAA over the past 4 years. The Optimus System, which is already operational in urban environments in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will now seek to expand its operations in urban settings across the United States.

Meir Kliner, CEO of Airobotics, expressed his excitement, saying, “After a long profound process done with the FAA and many of our partners, we are thrilled to announce that our OPTIMUS 1-EX drone has met all of the specific airworthiness and noise standards set by the FAA.

“Elsight, one of our long-term technological partners that provides us with the essential connection confidence required to achieve such a major milestone, played a great role as a close partner who supports our needs and requirements.”

Type Certificates (TC) are critical in maintaining the safety of people in the US and will play a major role in how drone technology is deployed in the coming years. These certificates are mandatory prerequisites for all manned aircraft, ensuring that certified aircraft and components meet specific airworthiness standards set by regulatory authorities. Since the FAA initiated the TC process for Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) in 2019, numerous drone companies have pursued this certification, with Airobotics emerging as the first to achieve it for urban data-capturing applications.

The Optimus System is well-regarded for its proven reliability, safety, and value, making it a mature and trusted automated drone platform in the market. Ondas believes that the TC represents a game-changing solution for local governments and commercial entities seeking to streamline aerial data capture in American cities.

Yoav Amitai, Elsight CEO, extended congratulations to Airobotics, stating, “This is a major step forward for the drone industry in general. Completing the long-complicated process to achieve the first non-air carrier drone Type Certification by the FAA shows that the regulators are coming to the position that drones are a part of the future.

“We are proud that Airobotics has chosen the Elsight Halo as their connectivity solution; their completion of the Type Certification with the Halo onboard is a vote of confidence in Elsight and in the Halo, and we expect many more to come.”

For the Half Year ended 30 June 2023, Elsight reported USD $595k revenue which was a 65% increase on the previous corresponding period.
