ClearVue bags Hong Kong government contract for energy harvesting

At a time when companies are trying to become carbon neutral, smart technology companies are winning big.

Making its first move into the Hong Kong market, smart building materials company, ClearVue Technologies (ASX: CPV), has been awarded a tender to conduct a measurement and verification study (M&V Study)—to understand how much energy it can save—in partnership with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the Hong Kong government. It will involve installing five ClearVuePV integrated glazing unit (IGU) panels, which cover around 13.2 sqm of glazing, at the EMSD’s headquarters in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

These panels are known to prevent heat from entering the building and redirect sunlight towards energy panels. A win-win!

The EMSD has allocated $72,000 for the paid M&V Study, which officially started on March 1, 2023.

ClearVue Executive Chairman, Victor Rosenberg, said, “ClearVue is pleased to have been selected by the Hong Kong government to complete this study on the role solar glazing can have in assisting the government of Hong Kong in achieving its decarbonization goals on the road to Net Zero.

“The selection of the ClearVue product by the EMSD for completing this study is [a] testament to how the ClearVue product is now being seen globally – that is, as one of only a few commercially available glazing products that, in addition to offering power generation on site, genuinely offers a compelling energy efficiency solution for advanced building envelope design.”

The study aims to evaluate the ClearVue PV solar glass’s performance by examining its optical properties, energy harvesting, and energy efficiency. It will compare the ClearVue PV glazing against existing conventional glazing and will involve designing, supplying, delivering, and installing the ClearVue solar glazing. The outcome of the study will produce comparative verified datasets for both glazing methods.

The EMSD provides electrical and mechanical services for the Hong Kong SAR and plays a vital role in promoting social safety and enhancing the citizens’ quality of life. One of the department’s functions is assessing building efficiency under the HK Building Energy Efficiency Ordinance. And now, with efficiency intertwined with sustainability, the responsibilities have broadened, making room for such studies. The tender was issued by the EMSD to investigate solar glazing solutions for the Hong Kong SAR.

Additionally, in a bid to grow in the Southeast Asian region, the Company has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with AZ Group and its subsidiary MyWindows in Cambodia as well as an update on its progress on the BCA Skylab testing in Singapore, amongst other things.

Material terms for the M&V Study tender contract include a fee of $72k to be paid in tranches linked to the completion of study phases.

The completion of the M&V Study and its verified data will validate the value of ClearVue PV glazing technology and products for use in various government building deployments in the Hong Kong SAR. The EMSD endorsement is a prerequisite for government engagement in the SAR, and great validation for ClearVue’s tech.
