Generational changes to how the world functions has filtered into the higher education sector with the University of NSW partnering with OpenLearning (ASX: OLL) to create a new online pathway program that can transition successful students into UNSW degrees. 

The progressive online program will be operated by OpenLearning and will primarily be student-driven rather than the traditional method of tutor-driven higher education. As such, the program will culminate in assessments conducted via online interviews rather than offline tasks such as exams, focusing on the communication element of education which addresses issues prior to an international student’s arrival in Australia. 

“We’re excited to partner with UNSW Global to set a new standard for online education by re-imagining the UNSW Transition Program,” said OpenLearning CEO, Adam Brimo. 

“For the first time, we’re combining OpenLearning’s socially constructive and community-driven approach with a teaching model that integrates small group and personalised coaching, continuous portfolio-based assessment and final interviews instead of exams to create a superior learning experience that will thoroughly prepare students to succeed at Australia’s top universities.” 

The online programs are tipped to take four months for an international student to complete online. Once qualified, students will then gain entry into UNSW while meeting the same entry criteria as UNSW’s on-campus Transition Program. 

Under terms of the 5-year partnership, all learning content will be provided by UNSW where OpenLearning will then deliver the program. Enrollment fees will be paid directly to UNSW Global with OpenLearning to then receive $6,000 – $9,000 for each student enrolled in the online program.

By engaging OpenLearning to deliver the online program, international students will have greater access to teachers and peer interaction with other students around the world while significantly saving on expenses incurred by on-campus students.
