Southern Cross Electrical lands three data centre projects with Amazon, Microsoft and NEXTDC

Heyday is enjoying its heyday, signing on tech giants as clients once again. In a significant development, electrical engineering company Southern Cross Electrical Engineering (ASX: SXE) subsidiary, Heyday—an electrical installation service, has been awarded three prestigious data centre projects in Sydney. Collectively, they are valued at over $60 million.

The projects are poised to reinforce Heyday’s position in the thriving data centre industry, especially seeing as they are with some of the biggest tech companies, including Amazon, Microsoft and NEXTDC.

SCEE Group Managing Director Graeme Dunn said “The data centre construction market in Australia is growing significantly reflecting the trends of exponential increases in data creation and usage, the transition to the cloud and the onshoring of data arising out of cybersecurity concerns.”

One of the notable contracts has been granted by J Hutchinson Pty Ltd for the electrical services subcontract of Stages 1 and 2 of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) SYD054 Orion Data Centre project, located in Smeaton Grange, NSW. This ambitious undertaking involves the meticulous construction of a two-storey, 48MW data centre across twelve stages within AWS’s secure facility. Heyday, already engaged in the construction of the Tape Library project on the same premises, will now embark on these initial stages, which encompass the site infrastructure, base-building shell and core, as well as the fit-out of Data Halls 1 and 2.

With works scheduled to start in June 2023, completion is anticipated by July 2024. Impressively, the SYD054 project marks the fourth collaboration between Heyday and AWS, following the successful completion of SYD053, SYD700, and SYD701 over the past three years.

Another remarkable achievement for Heyday comes in the form of the electrical services subcontract for the Microsoft SYD08 Data Centre project, located in Seven Hills, NSW, awarded by Taylor Construction Group Pty Ltd. This venture entails the construction of a two-storey, 19.2MW data centre building, alongside an administration support building, associated site works, external plant yards, and the installation of nine new diesel generators to ensure reliable power backup. Heyday’s participation in this project is set to commence in June 2023, with a targeted completion date in late 2024.

Heyday has been given an additional contract by Multiplex Constructions Pty Ltd for electrical services at the NEXTDC SYD03 Artarmon NSW Data Centre. This contract builds upon Heyday’s previous work and involves expanding the Stage 1 area, increasing power capacity, and overseeing the fit-out of Data Halls 3C, 3D, and 4A. The project has already begun and is expected to be completed by May 2024.

Dunn added, “This series of awards demonstrates Heyday’s strong position in that space. The fact that all three of these projects are for repeat customers shows the high regard in which Heyday’s reputation for successful delivery in this sector is held.”

With demand for data storage and cloud services growing, Heyday’s reputation will help set it apart amid growing competition.
