Spacetalk enters New Zealand retail market with child smartwatches that limit browsing access to illicit content

Parents in New Zealand will soon be able to get their hands on cutting-edge technology designed for child safety with tech company Spacetalk (ASX: SPA) signing a partnership agreement with New Zealand-based retailer, The Warehouse Group NZ, to have their smartwatch products sold in 145 stores. 

The Adventurer 2 and Spacetalk Loop smartwatches are designed to keep families connected while addressing the growing concern over child internet safety.

Spacetalk’s smartwatches are equipped with features that enable parents to stay connected with their children in a secure and controlled manner. The devices allow for voice calls, messaging, and location tracking, empowering parents with the tools to ensure their children’s safety in an increasingly digital world. The move into the New Zealand market comes as a strategic response to the underdeveloped Kids Wearables category within the country.

The Warehouse Group NZ agreement represents a crucial milestone for Spacetalk, providing immediate access to a substantial retail network and paving the way for the company to tap into the New Zealand market’s potential according to CEO, Simon Crowther. 

“Our partnership agreement with Warehouse Group NZ has effectively fast-tracked our planned push into the New Zealand-based retail market-place. It gives NZ-based consumers the opportunity to see how our attractive Adventurer 2 and Spacetalk Loop smartwatch products can keep families connected.”

“The agreement will help Spacetalk further leverage the universal desire families have to keep their vulnerable members safe. We anticipate that sales derived from this scaled New Zealand sales channel will promptly provide cross sell opportunities. Success on this front will, in turn, take Spacetalk a step closer to delivering on its stated goal of tripling its annual recurring revenues to around $20-25 million within the coming three years.” 

One of the key attractions for parents is the limited browsing access feature of Spacetalk’s smartwatches, aligning with the growing concerns about child internet safety. Research data underscores the importance of restricting children’s access to the internet, as exposure to inappropriate content and potential online risks continue to rise.

Research by the Australian Institute of Family Studies indicates that children and young people are accessing pornography at increasing rates, often as young as 14 years old. It has prompted a Senate inquiry into the effects of pornography on children due to concerns about the ease of access and proliferation of increasingly violent pornographic content.

The Spacetalk devices provide a controlled online environment, allowing parents to manage and monitor their children’s online activities, thereby fostering a safer digital experience.

With its innovative products and a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of families, Spacetalk is aiming to become a household name in New Zealand, enhancing the digital well-being of the younger generation.
