Sprintex engaged to develop next gen air compressors for hydrogen fuel cells

Like many developments in the world of engineering, there’s nothing particularly sexy about air compressors but as the world moves towards clean energy adoption, they are vital cogs in fuel cells, which is just one reason Sprintex (ASX: SIX) has been engaged to develop an innovative new design. 

The engagement comes from existing technology partner Aeristech Limited which has commissioned Sprintex to design two innovative electric compressors for advanced fuel cell applications.

The first of the compressors will be an ultra high speed 160,000rpm compressor which will offer higher efficiency for a fuel cell than the current standard of technology. These will be the next iteration of Sprintex’s superchargers that are used in automotive vehicles around the world. This space is expected to gather even more as hydrogen fuel engines become more popular given they require a constant flow of oxygen rich air to perform. 

The second of the new designs is for a refrigerant compressor suitable for heating ventilation and air conditioning. It’s use will be in domestic and industrial heat pump applications but based on the intended size, it will also be capable of installation within electric vehicles to power cabin air conditioning. 

Work is expected to commence immediately with the contract valued at $112,000 for the two design programs with 50% payable upfront. 

Sprintex expected the work to be completed within 12 weeks while the commercial supply agreement is still being negotiated, likely dependent on the success of the design. 

For the half year ended 31 December 2021, Sprintex reported a 14% decline in revenue to $280,000, attributing the decline to Government lockdowns in Malaysia, the United States and Australia which impacted their sales capabilities. 

The commissioning of these two new compressors is on top of the 2-year collaboration between Aeristech and Sprintex where Sprintex will incorporate Aeristech’s proprietary IP into their compressors and act as the sales representative to promote Aeristech products.
