Champion Iron (ASX: CIA) has completed its acquisition of Norwegian iron ore producer Rana Gruber, securing a controlling interest through a cash offer and marking a significant step in building a diversified, global high-purity iron ore business.
Transformational Acquisition Strengthens Market Position
The Company received acceptances representing over 92% of Rana Gruber’s issued capital, enabling completion of the transaction and positioning Champion to move toward full ownership. The acquisition brings together two complementary operations, enhancing Champion’s presence in key markets and strengthening its position as a supplier of high-purity iron ore.
Champion Iron Chief Executive Officer David Cataford commented:
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for Rana Gruber. For more than 60 years, we have built a strong operational track record and earned a trusted position as a leading supplier of high-purity iron ore to the European steel industry. This transaction brings together complementary assets and a shared vision to strengthen our leadership position in the iron ore market.”
Expanding Product Offering and Market Reach
Rana Gruber is an established producer of high-purity iron ore with a long operating history and proximity to European customers. The addition of its operations expands Champion’s product portfolio to include a broader range of high-purity iron ore products, including specialty materials that attract premium pricing.
The transaction also enhances geographic diversification, adding a strong European customer base to complement Champion’s existing operations and sales channels.
Positioned to Support Green Steel Demand
The combined group is well positioned to benefit from growing demand for high-grade iron ore used in low-emission steel production. Both companies share a focus on supplying materials suited to the green steel supply chain, supported by access to renewable energy and ongoing product quality improvements.
Next Steps Following Completion
Following completion of the offer, Champion intends to proceed with compulsory acquisition of remaining shares and delist Rana Gruber from the Oslo exchange, subject to regulatory requirements. The Company will now focus on integrating the operations and working with the Rana Gruber team to maximise value from the combined platform.
Building a Diversified Global Producer
The acquisition establishes Champion as a larger, more diversified high-purity iron ore producer with exposure to multiple markets and product streams. The transaction supports the Company’s long-term strategy to expand its asset base and strengthen its role in supplying premium iron ore to global steel producers.
