The removal of level crossings across Victoria has been a welcome change for Melbournians who have been reaping the benefits of smoother flowing traffic and less of that annoying, incessant ‘ding ding ding ding’ that we all despise.

So far the Victorian Government’s “Big Build” program has seen the removal of 46 of 75 level crossings.With the boom gates down for an average of 42 minutes in the mornings, the level crossing at Edithvale Road, Edithvale is next on the list to tackle. The plan is to sink the rail line into a trench and construct a new road at ground level. 

L&M Traffic Services, a subsidiary of Traffic Technologies (ASX: TTI) has won the contract to supply and install Intelligent Traffic Systems for the project which is expected to be completed in October 2021. L&M’s systems will service a busy four lane intersection with dedicated turning lanes over the rail line. 

The removal of the level crossing and implementation of smart traffic tech will both improve road safety and reduce congestion as the city grows. 

Further from home, Traffic Technologies has also announced another contract awarded to subsidiary company Aldridge Traffic Systems in the UK. The Company will provide “Smart City” iCells for the control of street lighting for the Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council for the next two years, with an option to extend the contract for another 2 years to 2025. Over the next few years the Company will supply over 3600 iCell units to the council.

Managing Director of Traffic Technologies, Con Liosatos said: “These contracts are both of significance to the Company. The acquisition of L&M Traffic Services has enabled the Company to take on projects such as level crossing removals, whilst at the same time the connection with the Company has enabled L&M Traffic Services to take on larger scale projects such as Edithvale.”

Along with street lighting and Smart City trials in Ireland, this contract provides significant potential for further growth and presence in the UK market through the introduction of new, competitive and innovative products and “Smart City Systems”.
