The City of Calgary is set to become a lot more efficient having engaged smart city tech company SenSen Networks (ASX: SNS) for law enforcement devices that will reduce the reliance on human law enforcement.
The contract, valued at $4.6 million (CAD $4.2 million) over five years, includes the supply of advanced vehicle-mounted and fixed lane mobile enforcement systems. With an initial rollout slated for the second half of FY25, the contract also includes two potential two-year extensions, potentially stretching the deal to nine years.
The City of Calgary has been a customer of SenSen since 2016 and has been a key partner in rolling out AI-driven solutions. The city recently issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) seeking a replacement for its existing vehicle monitoring and enforcement technology. Following a global search, SenSen was selected to continue as the technology provider.
The new contract will replace Calgary’s current enforcement hardware and software with SenSen’s solutions, featuring mobile cameras and fixed lane systems. As part of the agreement, a proof-of-concept phase will begin in September 2024, expected to last 11 weeks, and is included within the five-year contract term.
“Calgary has been a long-time customer of SenSen, and we are thrilled they continue to recognise the value of our technology,” said SenSen CEO, Dr Subhash Challa.
“Our solutions not only optimise kerbside use and make streets more pedestrian-friendly but also help cities make better use of public spaces.”
The City of Calgary’s continued investment in SenSen’s smart enforcement technology is part of a broader trend where cities worldwide are turning to AI and smart systems to tackle urban challenges. With rapid urbanisation, cities are increasingly using AI to make public services more efficient, reduce traffic congestion, and improve road safety.
SenSen’s technology, built on its Live Awareness AI platform, is designed to integrate data from cameras and sensors with real-time digital data, creating more responsive and safer urban environments.
Why cities are embracing smart technology
Around the world, cities are facing complex challenges, from managing traffic congestion to improving public safety and making urban spaces more liveable. Smart city technology, driven by AI, has emerged as a key solution for urban management. These technologies help cities operate more efficiently by gathering data from urban infrastructure, like traffic lights, cameras, and sensors, and using it to optimise traffic flow, monitor parking, and improve emergency response times.
In Calgary, the implementation of smart enforcement technology aligns with the City’s goals of making its streets safer for pedestrians and reducing congestion.
The use of mobile enforcement systems, like those provided by SenSen, allows for real-time monitoring and dynamic response, addressing issues like illegal parking and traffic violations more effectively.
For the year ended 30 June 2024 (FY24), SenSen Networks reported $12.1 million revenue which represented a 12.5% increase. While revenue is rising, SenSen is still in the process of recouping expenditure applied towards its tech development, incurring a $3.6 million net loss after tax. This was however, a substantial improvement on the $7.2 million loss reported in FY23 having added 10 cities across North America to their client list over the year.
The Company also had wins in Australia and The Philippines where it successfully had court cases thrown out, after a competitor attempted to claim IP infringements before SenSen agreed to settle the case without admissions.
